I came across a wonderful poem in The Old Schoolhouse magazine the other day. It touched me so much, as it completely describes how I have been feeling lately as my sons' "teacher." What wonderful encouragement this poem was to me that I am certainly not alone in my feelings of utter inadequacy in this area. The Lord knew I needed this kinship and understanding through the words of a woman who lived so many years ago. May this bless, uplift and encourage you as it did me...

The Teacher
by Leslie Pinckney Hill (1880-1960)

LORD, who am I to teach the way
To little children day by day,
So prone myself to go astray?

I teach them KNOWLEDGE, but I know
How faint they flicker and how low
The candles of my knowledge glow.

I teach them POWER to will and do,
But only now to learn anew
My own great weakness through
and through.

I teach them LOVE for all mankind
And all God's creatures, but I find
My love comes lagging far behind.

Lord, if their guide I still must be,
Oh let the little children see
The teacher leaning hard on Thee.

It doesn't take monumental feats to make the world a better place. It can be as simple as letting someone go ahead of you in a grocery line.
